3 Stretches for “Tech Neck”
on Thursday, April 12, 2018The modern world’s effect on our bodies is becoming painfully apparent as it affects our health, wellness, and comfort. It is evidenced in the strains and pains we develop as our modes of communication become increasingly centered around our smartphones. And it’s not just our hands and wrists that bear the brunt of this cultural evolution; our neck and back are in danger as well.
Constantly staring down at your cellphone can result in excessive strain on your neck, which can then result in spinal muscle imbalances. A common consequence is chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain. Restricting use of your smartphone is a start, but also consider these three exercises that can prevent stiffness and help strengthen the muscles that support your head and neck, and potentially help relieve the pain caused by “tech neck.”
3 Stretches For Tech Neck
Begin each of these stretches by sitting up looking straight ahead.
- Turn your head to the left and look over the left shoulder; hold position for five seconds, then release it. Repeat on the right side.
- Raise your shoulders up to your ears; hold for five seconds, then release.
- Roll your shoulders towards the chest a total of 5 times; now, roll shoulders toward the back.
