There are many exercises and stretches that can help relieve back pain, but for novices looking for easy stretches to prevent certain aches and pains, here is one easy, beginner stretch to get started.

This stretch is called the Standing Back Arch and is a great way to begin your exercise program, break up a long day of sitting at your desk, or boost circulation when you’re feeling cramped.

Standing Back Arch

  1. Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Put the palms of your hands on your lower back and take a few slow, deep breaths to relax.
  3. Bend your upper body backward, keeping your knees straight. Support your back with your hands. Hold for 5 seconds.
  4. Return slowly to your starting position.
  5. Repeat 5 times.

The Standing Back Arch can relieve stiffness as well as prevent cramping that can lead to long-term pain. Make time to engage your back muscles with this easy stretch daily. Do not continue this stretch if increased pain is experienced.
