Perhaps it’s a term you’ve heard before, or it may be your first experience with the phrase. Either way, it’s important to know that Personal Injury Protection (or PIP) is mandatory automobile insurance coverage that pays medical expenses for auto-related injuries.

When individuals are in pain and suffering from injuries sustained in an automobile accident, one of the last things they want to think about is insurance. That is why it is important to know that regardless of who is at fault, mandatory PIP coverage is part of all Oregon residents’ auto insurance policy, and it should pay all medical bills resulting from the accident. PIP coverage is also known as no-fault Personal Injury Protection and covers all occupants of the car, as well as pedestrians or cyclists hit by a car. Even if pedestrians and cyclists don’t carry PIP coverage themselves, the driver’s PIP insurance should pay all of the resulting medical bills.

It is mandatory for drivers in the state of Oregon to carry PIP insurance since, in the case of an accident, medical bills are charged first to the PIP insurance carrier. It is only when that coverage is exhausted that an individual’s healthcare plan would be charged.

Specific PIP benefits vary based on your insurance policy, but Oregon Law provides minimum requirements for all PIP benefits. The most common of these requirements is $15,000 for reasonable and necessary crash-related medical treatment incurred up to two years from the date of the accident. Also, as patients are now allowed to self-refer for physical therapy in the state of Oregon, many auto insurances do not require a physician’s prescription to receive physical therapy treatment.

Renew Physical Therapy is proud to serve Portland-area residents suffering from injuries related to auto accidents. Renew Physical Therapy utilizes several therapeutic modalities, including cold/heat, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation to relieve pain and reduce inflammation as well as massage, specialized mobilization and taping techniques, and therapeutic stretching/strengthening exercises to restore pain-free function.
