Do You Need A Doctor’s Referral To See A Physical Therapist?
on Thursday, May 16, 2019In Oregon, we are fortunate to have “Direct Access” to physical therapists. In fact, as of 2015 all 50 states now have direct access to physical therapy. This means that you can legally see them directly, without a referral. However, some insurance companies still require a referral in order to have physical therapy services paid for.
Why Go Directly to a PT?
You can save both time and money. A physical therapist is a doctor and can diagnose your pain or mobility issues. Instead of the extra step (and maybe extra copay), you can go directly to a physical therapist and get diagnosed and start your recovery process sooner.
Should My Doctor Know?
Yes. Physical therapists are collaborators and there are cases when we contact your doctor to get the full picture. As collaborators, we also know that no two recoveries are the same. We are frequently involved in a multidisciplinary approach with a number of pain management clinics in Portland who concurrently use other forms of conservative interventions such as oral medication, injection procedures of medication or prolotherapy, counseling, radiofrequency ablation, spinal electrical stimulator devices, acupuncture, etc.
