The “No Pain” Rule for Physical Therapy in Portland
on Thursday, March 28, 2019
Who remembers the infamous “No Pain, No Gain” exercise motto that came into prominence in the early ‘80s? When Jane Fonda used it in her exercise videos, the motto was meant to remind viewers that greater physical rewards would come from enduring more pain. The motto itself generated myths and misperceptions about physical therapy and recovery. Physical therapy does not need to be painful and, at Renew Physical Therapy, we adhere to a strict “no pain” rule. We don’t subscribe to pain as being an essential part of your treatment. We use modalities and other techniques throughout the course of treatment to ensure steady progress toward a full recovery.
UTILIZING THERAPEUTIC MODALITIES
Physical Therapy is not about forcing mobility and painful sessions. There are several modalities that are utilized to help achieve goals for recovery such as cold/hot packs, electrical stimulation, ultrasound/phonophoresis, and topical analgesics/anti-inflammatories to reduce inflammation.
WHAT ELSE IS INCLUDED WITH PHYSICAL THERAPY?
At Renew Physical therapy, we use the modalities described above with soft tissue massage, desensitization hands-on manual techniques, and bracing if necessary, to further settle the injured tissues and immediately begin decreasing acute pain. Joint mobilization procedures will help to reduce pain, improve mobility, and prevent long-term mechanical pain and dysfunction.
THE RENEW PHYSICAL THERAPY PHILOSOPHY IS PAIN-FREE
Our treatments are one-on-one, hands-on, pain-free, and focused on the root cause of each patient’s symptoms. Our manual therapy emphasis means that, rather than attempting to decrease pain by strengthening a painful body part as conventional physical therapy does, we believe in eliminating pain by improving joint function through mobilization techniques, patient education, and behavioral modification strategies.
