What Happens After Physical Therapy?
on Thursday, March 7, 2019Physical Therapy can be used to reduce or eliminate pain, avoid surgery, improve mobility, recover from stroke, recover from a sports injury, improve balance, strengthen muscles to prevent falls, and even manage pre-diabetes and age-related issues.
A treatment does not end after you complete your program. Your physical therapist may suggest specific routines after the treatment. However, there are a few things you can expect after you visit a physical therapist. Here’s what to expect following
YOU MAY STILL BE A BIT SORE
Swelling is the primary culprit when it comes to pain and soreness. You can reduce swelling and pain by icing the area you are experiencing soreness from. Inflammation is a natural part of the healing process. The recommended technique for icing an area is 20 minutes on and twenty minutes off. Apply ice as often as you feel necessary.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER
Your body needs to get rid of waste products while healing. Water is crucial to getting toxins moving through and out your body. The amount of water your body needs depends on your size and weight. A general rule of thumb is you should try to drink between half an ounce to an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day.
MONITOR YOUR BODY
It is a good idea to take notes. Even if you have a good memory, taking notes allows you to be more mindful of your recovery and helps you notice if things are trending one way or another. A record of your daily progress can be vital to the prevention of injury while returning to exercise. Share them with your physical therapist to discuss symptoms that might indicate recurrence of a prior injury.
