Physical Therapy Tips For Patients
on Thursday, September 19, 2019At Renew Physical Therapy, our philosophy for eliminating pain includes improving joint function through mobilization techniques, behavioral modification strategies, and patient education.
3 Tips For Success In Physical Therapy
We believe that patient education is just as important as mobilization techniques and behavioral modification strategies. Patient participation is key to a successful treatment plan. Here are a few tips to help you make the most out of your physical therapy sessions.
1. Set Goals
It is helpful to think about the specific outcomes you are working towards after physical therapy. Moving better or experiencing less pain are great goals, but if you can be more specific, you will get closer to your goals. For example, you may want to return to a sport, stand for longer periods of time or be able to walk your dog again. These specific goals will help you focus on an outcome you can visualize.
2. Make Time A Priority
Making time for your appointments and homework is crucial for your recovery. If you have a busy schedule, make sure you carve time in your calendar to attend your appointments. If you have “homework” to do in-between appointments, make sure to set time out of your day to accomplish that as well.
3. Ask Questions
It is better to over-share with your physical therapist than to omit information that may be important. It is also important to manage your expectations and keep you informed. This is why questions from patients are encouraged. Your questions help us identify where your knowledge base is and where we can provide additional information.
How Renew Physical Therapy Can Help
The job of a physical therapist is to detect any biomechanical and lifestyle contributing factors to persistent pain conditions with a thorough subjective interview and physical examination. We continually re-assess each patient during his/her episode of care to ensure that the individualized treatment program is appropriately progressing toward a less painful and better quality of life.
In treating patients who are dealing with chronic pain, we are frequently involved in a multidisciplinary approach with a number of pain management clinics in Portland who concurrently use other forms of conservative interventions such as oral medication, injection procedures of medication or prolotherapy, counseling, radiofrequency ablation, spinal electrical stimulator devices, acupuncture, etc.
We realize that physical therapy is not always the answer in eliminating one’s physical pain, especially in cases of chronic pain that has been present for many years, but we believe we can assist most individuals in achieving a more manageable level of pain and, thus, a better quality of life.
