Our Pain-Free Physical Therapy Philosophy
There is a stigma that physical therapy includes pain. In fact, some feel it is encouraged as part of the recovery process, i.e., the pain tells you that it is working. At Renew Physical Therapy, located in SE Portland, we have a no pain rule for physical therapy.
Our treatments are one-on-one, hands-on, pain-free, and focused on the root cause of each patient’s symptoms. Our manual therapy emphasis means that, rather than attempting to decrease pain by strengthening a painful body part, as conventional physical therapy does, we believe in eliminating pain by improving joint function through mobilization techniques, patient education, and behavioral modification strategies.
We Also Treat Pain
We will utilize therapeutic modalities, i.e., cold/heat, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation, to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. We will also use specialized massage and mobilization/manipulation techniques, as well as therapeutic stretching/strengthening exercises to restore pain-free function.
Types of Pain We Treat
Physical Therapy for Chronic Pain: Chronic pain can be caused by a gradual degenerative process such as arthritis or degenerative disc disease, musculoskeletal sprains/strains or overuse injuries that were resistant to other forms of medical intervention.
Physical Therapy for Neck Pain: Neck pain can be caused from a multitude of factors, ranging from a non-injury such as sitting too long during a road trip or at the computer to an injury such as an auto accident, fall, or awkward lift. Oftentimes the cause is unknown to the client and can be non-physical such as emotional stress or from gradual progressive onset.
Physical Therapy for Shoulder Pain: Shoulder pain commonly occurs from physical injury such as a throwing injury or fall, repetitive overuse such as in racquet sports or home improvement projects, sudden onset from sleeping awkwardly, or no particular cause.
Physical Therapy for Elbow Pain: Elbow pain commonly occurs from physical injury such as a throwing injury or fall, repetitive overuse such as in racquet sports or computer work, sudden onset from sleeping awkwardly, or no particular cause.
Physical Therapy for Knee Pain: Knee pain typically occurs from physical injury, overuse injury, or from gradual accumulated “wear and tear” as seen in arthritis. In cases of gradual pain onset, the presence of a mobility or muscle imbalance may have predisposed the individual to developing the knee pain.
